The National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution

History National Air Museum was formed on August 12, 1946 by an act of Congress. Some pieces in the National Air and Space Museum collection date back to the 1876. In 1952 it was placed in the Maryland-National Capital Park. The Space race in 1950 and 1960 led to the renaming of the museum to the National Air and Space Museum. The new exhibition hall was opened in July, 1976. The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center was opened in 2003.

Architecture The museum is designed as four simple marble – encased cubes containing the smaller and more theatrical exhibits, connected by three spacious steel-and-glass atria which house the larger exhibits such as missiles, airplanes and spacecraft. Education At the Museum The National Air and Space Museum offers a variety of free educational programs for families, school groups and the general public. Guided School Group Tours are held at the National Mall Building and at the Steven Udvar-Hazy Center. Tour duration is about one hour. Popular Museum The Air and Space Museum was used as part of the setting in the 2009 film Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, but the film was actually shot in Vancouver. The Air and Space Museum that is in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, where Sam, Mikaela, Wheelie and Agent Simmons woke up Jetfire in SR-71 Blackbird mode, is the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center branch facility located near Dulles International Airport. As of 2007, over 6 million people visited the National Air and Space Museum.
