In the past this festival was a time of fear. People believed in ghosts and witches and they stayed at home.

At Hallowe’en the ghosts of the dead and all witches of the world rode in the sky on their broomsticks.

People cut horrible faces in pumpkins and put a candle inside, which shines through the eyes.

Children dress up as ghosts, witches, clowns, pirates and visit their neighbours. “Trick or treat!” they cry. The grown ups must give them a treat: some fruit, sweets or chocolate.

People invite their relatives and friends to Hallowe’en parties and send invitation cards, like this: To Kate from Mary. I’m having a party and I’d like you to come. Time: 7 o’clock Date: 31st of October Love Mary.
